It's also worth enabling "Minimize to system tray," so the app doesn't take up a taskbar slot while running in the background — just click the tray icon whenever you need to check status or switch nodes, for a much cleaner everyday experience.

One thing to watch for: some systems' security policies may restrict newly installed apps from launching automatically. If the setting doesn't seem to take effect, check your system's "Startup Apps" management to see if autostart permission was manually disabled for the app, and re-enable it there.

Step 2: Auto-Connect to a Node After Boot

Launching automatically isn't enough on its own — you also need the app to connect to a node right after it starts, otherwise you're still clicking Connect manually every time. Clients typically offer an "Auto-connect on launch" or "Remember last connection state" option — once enabled, the app will automatically try to reconnect to the node you last used every time you boot up, giving you true connect-on-boot behavior. If you're worried a fixed node might go down unexpectedly, you can pair this with an "Auto-select best node" feature, which runs a speed test on launch and connects to whichever node currently has the lowest latency, balancing convenience with reliability.

If you use multiple devices, we recommend setting up auto-connect independently on each one rather than relying on manual syncing between them — that way, whichever device you turn on first, computer or phone, it connects on its own without depending on the other.

Step 3: Pick the Right Proxy Mode So Traffic Takes the Right Path

The system proxy setting determines which traffic on your computer actually routes through the V2Ray client. Global Proxy sends every network request through the proxy, which is useful for troubleshooting, but for everyday use it also slows down access to sites in mainland China and burns unnecessary bandwidth. PAC mode automatically decides based on a rule list — mainland China sites connect directly, everything else routes through the proxy — making it the better choice for daily use. Clients usually remember your last-selected proxy mode, so combined with the autostart and auto-connect settings above, the whole process can run with zero manual intervention: boot up, auto-connect, and your preferred proxy mode is applied automatically.

Last Step: Don't Let Your Subscription Quietly Go Stale

Providers are constantly maintaining and rotating nodes — if you go too long without updating your subscription, your node list will gradually go stale. Some clients let you set an auto-update interval for subscriptions (e.g. once a day, or every time the app launches), so you never have to remember to click "Update Subscription" manually. If your client doesn't offer that option, it's worth building a simple habit instead — tap "Update Subscription" every time you open the app; it only takes a second or two and prevents a large number of nodes from silently going dead over time. Some clients also support "auto-retry on update failure," further reducing how often you need to step in manually.

Once you've set up all four steps, every future boot gives you truly effortless, "invisible" connectivity. We recommend restarting your computer once right after the initial setup and walking through the full "boot → autostart → auto-connect → proxy applied" flow to confirm everything works as expected — after that, you can leave it entirely to the system without any manual steps.

Should I Keep My Settings Consistent Across Multiple Devices?

If you have v2rayN installed on several computers — say, one at work and one at home — we recommend configuring all four settings above on each device individually, rather than assuming "set once, works everywhere." Different devices can have different OS versions, power management policies, and network environments, so a setup that works fine on one machine may need re-checking on another — autostart permissions and proxy mode are especially prone to being reset by system updates.

Also, if you're already used to this "connected on boot" experience, don't forget to redo these four settings after getting a new computer or reinstalling your OS.
